Day 25. Booms, thunderclaps, explosions, clashes, splashes and roars.

At dusk we meet up with Muchaw. Today is the holiday of Bet Giorgis, but the churchgoers are still congregating, despite the fact that the priest has been screaming into a microphone since at least 5am. Therefore, we first head to the southern cluster of churches, we explored the northern one yesterday.

This painting is likely to have been created around the same time as most of Lalibela churches - in the 12th century (some churches date back as far as the 7th century).

I really like this contemporary painting, especially the high-fashion feather coat!
Podoba mi się to współczesne malowidło, a zwłaszcza haute couture wdzianko z piór!

A view of Lalibela.
Widok na Lalibelę.

Bet Giorgis is surrounded by hundreds of churchgoers. A speaker hung on a tree is bursting with ear-piercing static and snippets of a priest's voice, who is narrating the story of the Bet Giorgis miracle.

The entrance to the rock-hewn path leading to the bottom of Bet Giorgis.
Wejście do przesmyku prowadzącego do podnóża Bet Giorgis.

In the picture above showing Bet Giorgis from the top to the bottom, a small, overgrown basin can be seen. Supposedly, its water has special properties so getting splashed in the face with it is a desired thing.

I adore this picture. It transports me back in time, as cliché as it may sound.
Uwielbiam to zdjęcie. Mam wrażenie, że przenosi mnie w czasie, jakkolwiek banalnie to brzmi.

We had dinner at this tiny family-run restaurant recommended to us by Muchaw.
Obiad zjedliśmy w niewielkiej rodzinnej restauracji poleconej przez Muchaw.

According to the plan, tomorrow we should be hitting the road, but we don't feel ready to part with Lalibela just yet. We have a hankering to go to the mountains. We brainstorm and decide that tomorrow we'll have Muchaw take us to a mountain monastery where we'll set up camp. If the tent withholds the rain and we don't get eaten by wolves, we'll stay there for the next few nights.

The devil doesn't sleep. As soon as we make arrangements, I come down with a fever. We go for dinner. I feel worse and worse. When we return to the hotel, I take my temperature: 100.4. We cancel the plans. I just hope it's not malaria. The incubation period is at least 7 days and it's been 8 days since we arrived in Bahir Dar where malaria is present.
