You're soft. Like a detergent bear. Oh, and look. There's a little ear.

In a perfect world, I would be stopping e-v-e-r-y  time I see something picture-worthy. In this world though, we might be in a rush, or there is nowhere to safely pull over, or the driver is grumpy.

Here are a few pictures I did get to snap on our way back from the tiny house.

I'm not crazy, I'm just colorful.

Behind us are two surreal weeks. Doctors, hospitals, bureaucratic struggles. Lee's dad is battling an illness, and we are working on taming the new reality.

I'm taking pictures again. I have the need to write. I desperately need a routine.

The South will come soon, but for now more images from the North, back when everything was the way it was supposed to be.

A few years ago I went nuts for tiny houses built by Tumbleweed. Have you seen them? For a little while I even fantasized about building one, but I remembered our life in Mr. Van and all the desires to kill each other that living in such close quarters had brought out of us.

Looking for a place for our getaway from Boston, I came across a tiny house in the western part of the state. Eager to have the experience, we decided that we could stand each other on 160 square feet for one night.

The house has a fully equipped kitchen, a dining/living room, a bathroom with a shower and a composting toilet (yay!), and a bedroom in the loft. In spring and summer it is heated with a wood burning stove (the house is not used in the winter - the water hose freezes).

What's interesting is that reclaimed church organ wood was used in the house's construction.

The house is located on the grounds of a spiritual retreat. The vibes are a bit fanatical for our tastes, you know, peace labyrinths, healing circles, and crystals. We were a bit worried that we might get used as a human sacrifice.

Oh, what a bloody pickle this is.

It was in Boston that ether was used for the very first time to put a patient under. A patient (who, for a change, was not screaming from pain) was relieved of a neck tumor. Why do I mention it? Because not long ago we visited the Ether Dome, the operating theater at Massachusetts General Hospital, where the pioneer anesthesia took place. To w Bostonie po raz pierwszy uśpiono pacjenta eterem. Pacjentowi (niewrzeszczącemu dla odmiany z bólu) usunięto guza szyi. Dlaczego o tym piszę? Bo niedawno odwiedziliśmy Ether Dome, operacyjny teatr w Massachusetts General Hospital, gdzie pionierskie znieczulenie miało miejsce.

Due to the use of ether, surgeries no longer resembled torture, but they remained spectacles. Can you imagine undergoing a surgical procedure involving a commenting audience? Dzięki eterowi operacje nieco przestały przypominać tortury, choć pozostały widowiskiem. Wyobrażacie sobie być poddanym zabiegowi chirurgicznemu z udziałem komentującej widowni?

The most interesting thing about the Ether Dome to me was the painting (a mural, actually) from the first picture. It is contemporary, and for the purpose of its creating, the scene of the first surgery using ether was reenacted. The roles were played by the most notable doctors of Massachusetts General Hospital, who patiently get clad in starched shirts and glued-on beards and mutton chops. Aktorami byli najznakomitsi lekarze Massachusetts General Hospital, którzy cierpliwie dali się ubrać w wykrochmalone koszule i okleić w brody i bokobrody.
