Day 6 / Dzien 6.

This park was full of wonders. In the morning we discovered that we not only had a great river view but a lake view as well. Somehow we chose a sliver of land in between the two to spend the night. Another great discovery was that there was a shower facility on a nearby beach. After an ice-cold shower you don’t even need your morning coffee…

We visited a local fish hatchery, which had an interesting collection of specimen in jars of formaldehyde. There were also large tubs with floating eggs that were being hatched. Eyes seem to be the first thing to develop so the whole thing looked like lava lamps full of eyes!

Odwiedzilismy miejscowa wylegarnie ryb, z ciekawa kolekcja okazow w sloikach z formalina. Byly tam rowniez wielkie tuby z zawieszonymi w wodzie rozwijacacymi sie jajeczkami. Wyglada na to, ze pierwsze wyrastaja oczka, wiec calosc przypomina lawowe lampy pelne oczu!

Next, we took local roads* to Mitchell, to see the famous Corn Palace a.k.a. the Taj Mahal of Agriculture. Every year local artists use thousands of ears of corn and great amounts of grasses to create new murals. It all started in 1892 when the first palace was constructed and the area’s crops were impressively showcased in order to lure settlers. The early palaces are really amazing but it seems that now there is a bit lost. The palace is surrounded with souvenir stores and photo-opportunity objects like Happy Corn. We gave in (pictured).

Nastepnie lokalnymi drogami* udalismy sie do Mitchell, zeby zobaczyc Kukurydziany Palac zwany rowniez Tadz Mahal rolnictwa. Szczesliwa Kukurydza. Zlamalismy sie, jak trzeba, to trzeba (zdjecie ponizej).

* You could argue that there is nothing to see. But I enjoyed flat landscape of never ending fields. Horizon is very far away. Living in a city it’s easy to forget how big the sky can be.

The day was wrapped with dinner at an Ethiopian restaurant. Who would have thought that Sioux Falls had at least three of them? Now I could really consider living here.
We are spending the night at a ghostly rest area north of Sioux Falls.

Dzien zwienczylismy obiadem w etiopskiej restauracji. Kto by sie spodziewal? W Sioux Falls jest ich conajmniej trzy! Teraz naprawde moge zaczac rozwazac zamieszkanie tutaj.

  1. Holy cow that 1892 palace is impressive. I guess now they are only trying to lure tourists!
I love that area of the country. I could easily give up beaches to see that all the time - though I prefer the mountains.

  2. I'm so in love with South Dakota that I just might forgive them for what they did to the palace :-)
