For centuries Rome regarded the open hot turkey sandwich as the height of licentiousness.

Words are not sticking together today (maybe I haven't added enough egg?), so this time I'm serving pictures only. The not so good sandwiched between two slices of good. Gloucester - somewhere half-way - South Carolina - Gloucester. The ocean is good for the soul.

You always expect a sheep to have five legs.

Maine reminds me of Alaska. A lot. The life on Maine's islands is a lot like the life in the Alaskan bush - severely isolated from the world. It's an elsewhere forgotten microcosm of one room schools, unpaved roads, and Cessnas bringing your mail. And the winter both here and there will rough you up.

Running away from stress, Michelle and I ended up on one such island. Monhegen. 10 miles from the mainland. 20,000 leagues under the sea from the nonsense. The stress can suck it.
To zapomniany gdzie indziej makrokosmos jednopokojowych szkół, nieutwardzonych dróg i awionetkowej poczty. No i zima, i tu, i tam daje nieźle popalić.

Monhegen. 16 kilometrów od lądu. 20000 mil podmorskiej podróży od nonsensu. A teraz, drogie dzieci, pocałujcie Misia w dupę.

We're waiting for the ferry. Supplies and mail will board too. Bikes might as well. But cars will stay at the harbor. Ewentualnie rowery. Samochody zostaną w porcie.

A view of Manana Island. These days there's only an automated fog signal station there, but back in the day it was occupied by Ray Phillips, known in the region as the Hermit of Manana. Ray abandoned his NYC career, boarded a small sailboat and took off for the tiny island. He built a shack out of driftwood and spent the next 45 years raising sheep. He was one of my kind.

Docking!
Dobijamy!

Despite the summer presence of city dwellers, the island lives an island's life. Fishing and lobstering are essential. There are 60 year-round residents. The school is currently attended by one student. Our host told us that the kid spends one day a week in a mainland school. Oddball prevention. Pomimo letniej obecności mieszczuchów, wyspa żyje swoim życiem. Ryby i homary to podstawa. Prewencja dziwactwa.

The Island Inn towers over the harbor. It likely has not changed much since 1816. The rooms are not heated (the inn suggests packing long johns). Electricity is produced on the island and is so pricey that the inn does not offer A/C, hair dryers, nor fridges. I'm dreaming of a weekend here, but the prices are killing my dreams. The season is short, so the hotel must make enough while it lasts. The Island Inn dominuje nad portem.

A fishcake, coleslaw, and corn on a cob. Simple food, but look at the view! Placek z ryby, coleslaw i kolba. Proste jedzenie, za to jaki widok!

The island is famous for its cliffs and for artists obsessively fascinated by them. For the last 150 years, Monhegan has been an art colony and when walking the cliffs, you trip over an easel every few steps.

If there's beer, there are acceptable living conditions! This is most likely the only brewery in the US you can't get to by car. Because there is no car traffic on Monhagen! Jest piwo, można mieszkać! To prawdopodobnie jedyny w Stanach browar, do którego nie można dojechać samochodem. Bo po Monhegan się nie jeździ.

Waiting for the ferry back, we were watching the local pastime: you stand on your toes until you drop off into the water. Czekając na powrotny prom obserwowałyśmy miejscową rozrywkę: stoisz na palcach aż odpadniesz do wody.

We managed to get lost on our way to dinner and barely made it before closing. Miller's Lobster Co. serves what the fishermen catch that morning. Plus beer. And pies. Maine, you wonderful savage! I placki z owocami. Maine, ty cudny brutalu!
