We have clearance, Clarence. Roger, Roger. What's our vector, Victor?

Castle Island is a strange place. It's not an island (but it used to be one). There's no castle there (and never has been). But there's a fort, there's Pleasure Bay separated from the rest of the harbor where Bostonians soak during summer months, and there's a causeway over which planes come down for a landing at nearby Logan Airport.

We toured the fort with a mandatory guide. I don't remember anything and I took maybe two pictures. I was busy spotting planes. I really don't get this fascination of mine. I'm no aviation geek (nor will I ever be one). I am terrified of flying (although I did pilot a seaplane once). Yet I could spend my days watching planes take off and land (but of course on the causeway I was worrying myself sick with a scenario of one falling right on top of me).
Castle Island to dziwne miejsce.

Stories of my world famous root beer jacuzzi.

Combing through miles of sand in search of treasures is definitely my idea of the perfect day at the beach. Gold from a shipwrecked flotilla? A century old message in a bottle? Rolexes lost by rich beachgoers? Amber? All right, I'll also settle for a piece of sea glass or a strange looking shell. Przeczesywanie kilometrów piachu w poszukiwaniu skarbów to zdecydowanie moja wizja idealnego dnia na plaży. Złoto z zatopionej flotylli? Stuletnia wiadomość w butelce? Zgubione przez bogatych plażowiczów Rolexy? Bursztyny?

We fruitlessly looked for a live crab. Or even for a dead one in one piece. Finally we put one together and it made us laugh hysterically. Bezskutecznie szukaliśmy żywego kraba. Albo chociaż martwego kraba w jednym kawałku. Aż w końcu skompletowaliśmy jednego i dostaliśmy głupawki.

At the very tip of Cape Cod lies Provincetown. Since the 1920s it's been a mecca for artists, writers, poets, socialists, and radicals, and one of the most popular summer destinations for the LGBTQ community. It's home to the (allegedly) oldest gay bar in the US and among its summer residents are John Waters and Marc Jacobs. It was in Provincetown where Anthony Bourdain got his first kitchen job.

Mid 19th century, Cape Cod was reached by a wave of immigrants from mainland Portugal and the Azores. The newcomers worked mostly in fishing and whaling. 1 in 7 residents of Provincetown declares Portuguese ancestry.
The above large format pictures on the wharf are the 'They also faced the sea' project in remembrance of local Portuguese women. It was created by a great American photographer Norma Hold (what a character! I highly recommend the hilarious Ode to Norma) and a Polish artist Ewa Nogiec.
W połowie XIX wieku do Cape Cod dopłynęła imigracyjna fala z kontynentalnej Portugalii i Azorów.
Powyższe wielkoformatowe zdjęcia na przystani to projekt 'They also faced the sea' upamiętniający miejscowe Portugalki.

I tried to talk Lee into buying this tank top. In vain.

The largest litter box of his life and all the stenches of beached sea cadavers - we thought that Little Man would love the beach. Największa kuweta życia i te wszystkie smrodki morskich umarlaków - myśleliśmy, że Little Man pokocha plażę.

But it was very windy and the dude got stressed out. He might not be a beachgoer at heart after all. Ale strasznie wiało i chłopak się stresował. Plażowicz chyba z niego nie będzie.

It hides you from the world and the world from you.

When the New Yorkers are summering in the Hamptons, the Bostonians can be found in Cape Cod. Our family's family has a house there too. They invited us for a pre-season weekend. Off we went!

On the map, Cape Cod looks much like a muscular arm of a circus strongman. On one side of the arm, there is the ocean, on the other, there is the bay, and the fist is grasping the famous Provincetown. We stayed around the elbow.
Kiedy Nowojorczycy spędzają wakacje i letnie weekendy w Hamptons, Bostończyków znaleźć można w Cape Cod. Rodzina naszej rodziny też ma tam dom. Zaprosili nas na przedsezonowy weekend. No to pojechaliśmy!

My zamieszkaliśmy w okolicach łokcia.

These sleepy towns have their indisputable charm, but I can imagine that it's a children filled hell during the high season.

Cape Cod has its distinctive style of architecture - simple houses with sloped roofs, in earthy colors, with shingle covered walls.

Mail boxes - rainy day art projects, no doubt.
Skrzynki pocztowe - pewnie artystyczne projekty na deszczowe dni.

The family's family's family built a house in the area. We drove up to snoop around. W okolicy dom wybudowała rodzina rodziny rodziny. Pojechaliśmy na przeszpiegi.

Whoa! Check out the kitchen!
Ale patrzcie jaką kuchnię mają!

And the private dunes.
I prywatne wydmy!

I prefer this cozy house over that mansion though.
Ja tam wolę ten przytulny domek niż tamten wielki dwór.
