Auschwitz-Birkenau

We arrived very early. We didn't want a guide and didn't want to be around other people.
Przyjechaliśmy bardzo wcześnie. Nie chcieliśmy przewodnika i nie chcieliśmy towarzystwa innych ludzi.

The Arbeit Macht Frei (Work Makes One Free) gate.
Brama Arbeit Macht Frei (Praca Czyni Wolnym).

The gas chamber door.
Drzwi do komory gazowej.

Many of the buildings host exhibitions on the camp, the daily life of prisoners, the resistance movement, history of the WWII. Indoors picture taking is forbidden.

Wiele budynków zawiera wystawy na temat obozu, życia codziennego więźniów, ruchu oporu, historii II wojny światowej. Zabronione jest robienie zdjęć w pomieszczeniach.

From Auschwitz, which was the labor camp, we took a bus to the death camp, Birkenau.
Z obozu pracy w Oświęcimiu pojechaliśmy autobusem do obozu śmierci w Brzezince.

The train ramp where the selection took place.
Rampa kolejowa gdzie odbywała się selekcja.

The ruins of one of the Birkenau gas chambers.
Ruiny jednej z komór gazowych w Brzezince.

This exhibition made a huge impression on me. I couldn't stop thinking about how much like us people from these pictures were.

Ta wystawa zdjęć zrobiła na mnie ogromne wrażenie. Nie mogłam przestać myśleć o tym jak podobni do nas byli ci ludzie ze zdjęć.

Most of the buildings in Birkenau were made out of wood. For the most part, the brick chimneys visible in the distance are all that's left.

Większość budynków w Brzezince była drewniana. Ceglane kominy widoczne w oddali, to często jedyne co po nich zostało.

We were coming home physically and emotionally exhausted. But the morbid day wasn't over. Five minutes away from Gliwice our train came to a sudden stop and soon we learned the sad news that somebody was killed on the tracks. An hour later another train picked us up.

Wracaliśmy do domu fizycznie i emocjonalnie wyczerpani.

  1. Pamiętam wycieczkę do Auschwitz parę lat temu.

  3. When we were headed over to the Europa, I wasn't sure if I wanted to visit a "Camp" or not...It seemed like it would be so heavy and make a tragedy so real and tangible, I feared I would be haunted by it....Do you feel that way now? In a way just knowing you guys were there made it so real. Are you glad to have gone?
